For me and for thousands with similar inclinations, the most important passion of life is the overpowering desire to escape periodically from the clutches of a mechanistic civilization. To us the enjoyment of solitude, complete independence, and the beauty of undefiled panoramas is absolutely essential to happiness.

Gradually, physicists began to realise that nature, at the atomic level, does not appear as a mechanical universe composed of fundamental building blocks, but rather as a network of relations, and that, ultimately, there are no parts at all in this interconnected web. Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. . . Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
    Carl Gustav Jung

A human being is part of the whole, called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
    Albert Einstein

The Tao is both singular and universal. It is open to all with the resolve and inclination to walk it. Those who do, however, take a variety of disciplines in approaching it, for the Tao extrapolates from the specific to the general. Dave Lowry

The fundamental delusion of humanity is to suppose that I am here and you ar out there.

The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.
    Joseph Campbell

We are all born originals - why is it so many of us die copies?
    Edward Young

Our life is an apprenticeship to the truth that around every circle another can be drawn; that there is no end in nature, but every end is a beginning, and under every deep a lower deep opens.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars... and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers - for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.

    Raymond Inmon

Utopia lies at the horizon. When I draw nearer by two steps,it retreats two steps. If I proceed ten steps forward, it swiftly slips ten steps ahead.
No matter how far I go, I can never reach it. What, then, is the purpose of utopia? It is to cause us to advance.

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.
    David Attenborough

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.
    John Burroughs

If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.
    Vincent Van Gogh

Mountains inspire awe in any human person who has a soul. They remind us of our frailty, our unimportance, of the briefness of our span upon this earth. They touch the heavens, and sail serenely at an altitude beyond even the imaginings of a mere mortal.
    Elizabeth Aston

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity…
and some scarce see nature at all.But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.
    William Blake

As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can.
    John Muir

Study how water flows in a valley stream, smoothly and freely between the rocks. Also learn from holy books and wise people. Everything - even mountains, rivers, plants and trees - should be your teacher.

The Tao

The Tao, in Chinese philosophy, represents the ultimate and undefinable reality, the primordial energy of the universe which underlies and unifies all the complexity of things that unfold around us. Therefore it is considered to be the source of everything and the evolutionary mechanism, the driving power of nature that is always changing through the dynamic interplay of two opposite forces, the female and male principle, the Yin and the Yang.

The symbol of Tao, originally inspired by the shady and the sunny side of a mountain, is a circle divided into two embryonic shapes, one white and the other black. It visualizes the opposite principles embracing themselves, each one containing at its core the seed of the other polarity in an ever-changing and dynamic balance.

Tao and nature

The view of nature according to the principles of Tao is quite different from the one commonly perceived in the West.
An electron or a human being, a flower or a galaxy, a volcano or a butterfly, are all manifestations of Tao and part of the same wonderful, harmonious and undivided network. If we see reality under this angle, realizing that duality and separation is only illusory, it is possible to perceive an unified field of energy that permeates nature. If we observe it and if we merge in it, we can discover a deep connection between its evolutionary mechanism and the one that lead us in our growth.
Nature is a teacher that can show us how to be attuned to the ceaseless cycles of change, in balance with ourselves and, consequently, with the universe.

Today we can have an easy access to many informations and we can enrich our lives with what we consider to be the best in different traditions from different backgrounds.
I am at the same time the individual fascinated by the wisdom of the East and the geologist that see nature in a scientific way.
Etnatao, the name I have chosen for this project, combines those two polarities.
During the excursions I lead around Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, I offer to my hosts all the naturalistic details needed to appreciate the richness of such a peculiar ecosystem, but I try also to underline how volcanoes are linked to the planetary evolution in order to give them a broader experience of this place.
Especially in volcanic areas, it is easy to perceive the power of transformation of nature because it works at a very fast pace.
In our planet it manifests itself in different ways. On its surface, mountains are constantly growing and eventually they will be eroded and disappear while new ones will start forming in an endless cyclic pattern. We are not aware of it because those processes happen during millions of years and we live in a very different time frame. Around volcanoes like Mt. Etna, one of the most active volcanoes of the world, things are quite different. Due to its continuous activity, its landscape is defined a “dynamic” landscape that  continuously modifies the volcanic territory at each eruption.
Over here, for instance, a new crater can grow even several hundred meters in a matter of few weeks or few months, or an old one can disappear quickly for a collapse. Mt. Etna is a natural laboratory, a living organism and a powerful engine of change.
So, visiting Mt. Etna give us the unique opportunity to know an extraordinary place, to see evolution at work at an incredible speed and to have the possibility to feel that nature can really be a vehicle of growth and and a way of harmony.
